Every deer hunter remembers the first blind they built.

Most also remember everything they wish they had done differently.

Maybe it was built too low, and within a few summers the surrounding vegetation had grown high enough to block the best shooting lanes. Maybe the homemade windows rattled every time the wind picked up or refused to open quietly when a mature buck was standing just inside bow range. Perhaps the plywood walls began to swell after years of exposure to the weather, or the homemade door warped until it required a shoulder to close. Those problems rarely happen overnight. They develop one small decision at a time.

That's the thing about building a deer blind. Almost anyone with basic carpentry skills can build a structure that keeps the rain off their head. Building one that you'll still enjoy hunting from ten or fifteen years later requires a different way of thinking.

The best deer blinds aren't necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. They don't need every gadget on the market, and they certainly don't need to look like a luxury cabin in the woods. The best blinds are the ones you barely notice while you're hunting. You're comfortable enough to sit all day. The windows operate quietly. The floor doesn't creak every time you shift your weight. Your attention stays focused on the woods outside instead of the shortcomings of the blind you're sitting in.

I've spent countless hours hunting from homemade blinds, commercial blinds, and plenty that fell somewhere in between. Along the way I've learned that the decisions made during construction often have a much greater impact than the size of the blind or the amount of money invested in it. The siding you choose may determine whether you're replacing walls in five years. A poorly designed staircase can make climbing into the blind unnecessarily dangerous. Something as simple as painting the interior black can dramatically reduce the chances of a deer spotting movement inside the blind.

This isn't intended to be a set of blueprints or a step-by-step construction guide. There are already plenty of those available online. Instead, consider this a collection of lessons I've learned after years of building, modifying, and hunting from deer blinds. Some of these recommendations are based on accepted construction practices. Others are simply personal preferences that experience has taught me over time. You may not agree with every opinion, and that's perfectly fine. Every hunter has different priorities. My hope is simply that this article helps you avoid a few of the mistakes that many of us have made in previous builds.

It Starts Before You Ever Plug in the Saw

When people think about building a deer blind, they usually picture stacks of lumber, power tools, and framing walls. In reality, one of the most important steps happens before the first board is ever cut.

Site evaluation and preparation.

It isn't the most exciting part of the project, but it's one of the most important. Spending an extra hour preparing the location can save days of frustration later.

Start by clearing the entire area where the blind will sit. Remove brush, roots, rocks, and anything else that could interfere with the foundation or make construction more difficult. Once the area is clean, take the time to level the site as much as possible before construction begins.

A blind built on ground that is not perfectly level or not compact may not seem like a huge deal but time has a way of exposing shortcuts. As the structure settles, even a slight lean can cause doors to rub, windows to stop sealing correctly, and water to drain where it shouldn't. Eventually, the entire blind feels just a little "off," and that feeling never goes away.

I've found that concrete footers are well worth the additional effort. They provide a stable foundation, distribute the weight of the blind more evenly, and greatly reduce settling over time. They're far easier to install before construction than after several thousand pounds of lumber are already sitting on top of them. It's one of those investments you rarely think about again—but that's exactly the point.

Build the Foundation Like You Never Want to Rebuild It

With the site prepared, it's finally time to start building.

If you know how to weld, a frame constructed from one-inch square steel tubing is difficult to beat. Steel provides exceptional rigidity, won't twist or warp like wood can, and, when properly primed and painted, should provide decades of dependable service.

For those of us building with lumber, pressure-treated wood remains the best choice anywhere the structure will be exposed to the elements.

For the base of my blinds, I prefer pressure-treated 2×8 lumber with 3/4-inch Wolmanized plywood for the floor. I also frame my floor joists on 16-inch centers. Yes, wider spacing saves a little money, but I'd much rather spend a few extra dollars during construction than listen to a floor flex every time someone walks across it. A rigid floor simply makes the blind feel more solid, and that's something you'll appreciate every time you hunt from it.

One mistake I see fairly often is builders using pressure-treated lumber everywhere simply because they're building an outdoor structure. In reality, that's unnecessary. The base, skids, floor framing, stairs, and other components exposed to weather should absolutely be pressure treated. Once the blind is enclosed, however, the interior wall framing and roof framing are protected from the elements. Standard framing lumber is more than adequate for those areas, and it's usually straighter, lighter, easier to work with, and less expensive.

Good construction isn't about using the most expensive materials throughout the project.

It's about using the right materials in the right places.

Skip the Nails

If there's one recommendation I'll make without hesitation, it's this:

Build your blind with exterior-grade screws instead of nails.

A deer blind lives in a harsh environment. It spends years expanding and contracting through changing temperatures, humidity, rain, and wind. Over time, those constant seasonal movements can work nails loose, leading to squeaks, loose joints, and fasteners that slowly back themselves out.

Quality exterior screws provide a much tighter connection and are far less likely to loosen over time. They also make future repairs much easier. If you ever decide to relocate the blind, replace a wall panel, or make improvements years from now, you'll appreciate being able to remove screws instead of fighting nailed joints.

Just as importantly, make sure you're using screws designed specifically for exterior construction. Their corrosion-resistant coatings are made to withstand moisture and the chemicals used in pressure-treated lumber, helping ensure your blind remains just as solid years from now as it was the day you finished building it.

Small decisions like this rarely receive much attention during construction.

Years later, they're often the reason one blind is still standing strong while another is slowly being rebuilt.

Don't Save Money on the Wrong Materials

Every deer blind builder has a budget. There are certainly places where you can reduce costs without sacrificing quality.

In my opinion, exterior siding isn't one of them.

OSB and treated plywood are popular because they're inexpensive and readily available, but deer blinds live in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. They're exposed to intense sunlight, driving rain, humidity, freezing temperatures, and constant seasonal changes. Eventually, those conditions expose the weaknesses of cheaper materials.

I've seen OSB begin to swell after moisture found its way into exposed edges. Once that process starts, paint begins to fail, more moisture enters the material, and deterioration accelerates. Even treated plywood will eventually begin showing its age after a few years of exposure.

If I were building another blind tomorrow, I'd spend the extra money on LP SmartSide or build the blind with conventional framing and OSB and then cover it with steel panels. Both options have proven themselves to be significantly more durable over the long haul and require far less maintenance than traditional sheet goods. The upfront investment is greater, but so is the return. When you're still hunting from the same blind a decade from now instead of replacing deteriorating walls, the extra cost becomes much easier to justify.

One philosophy has guided nearly every recommendation in this article.

Think beyond opening day.

The decisions you make today will determine whether you're spending future hunting seasons watching deer—or repairing the blind you're sitting in.

Don't Build It Too Low

One of the first decisions you'll make after settling on a location is how high to build the blind. For many hunters, the answer comes down to cost and convenience. A shorter platform requires less lumber, shorter stairs, and generally less time to build.

That logic makes perfect sense—until it doesn’t.

One lesson I've learned over the years is that hunting properties are constantly changing. Native grasses grow taller, brush spreads, saplings mature into trees, and food plots evolve from season to season. What looks like an unobstructed view across a field when you're building the blind can look completely different five years later.

I've hunted from blinds that offered incredible visibility the day they were finished. A few years later, the surrounding vegetation had grown enough that I found myself leaning forward in my chair or standing just to see deer approaching from certain directions. Nothing was wrong with the blind itself—I had simply built it based on what the property looked like that day instead of what it would look like in the future.

Because of that, I've developed a simple philosophy: if you're debating whether to build it four feet off the ground or eight feet off the ground, and your hunting property allows for it, build it eight feet.

The additional height provides a better vantage point, improves visibility over tall grasses and brush, and often creates better shooting angles across fields and food plots. More importantly, it gives you room for the property to change without immediately limiting what you can see from the blind.

That doesn't mean every blind should resemble a fire tower. Taller structures require stronger foundations, better bracing, and more substantial stair systems. In heavily wooded areas, excessive height can even work against you if your windows end up looking directly into tree limbs instead of over the surrounding vegetation.

The point isn't to build the tallest blind possible.

It's to build one that will still hunt well years from now.

Windows Can Make or Break a Deer Blind

Ask experienced hunters what they'd change about the first deer blind they built, and windows usually make the list.

At first glance, building your own windows seems like an easy way to save money. A sheet of plexiglass, a handful of hinges, a latch, and some leftover lumber don't look terribly complicated.

Then you hunt from them.

I've hunted through homemade windows that rattled in the wind, scratched so badly after a few seasons that visibility suffered, and warped just enough that they no longer sealed tightly. Others became difficult to open quietly, and if you've ever tried easing open a noisy window while a mature buck is standing within range, you already know how frustrating that can be.

Building a window that's quiet, weather resistant, durable, and still operates smoothly years later is another story. That's why I've become a big fan of purpose-built deer blind windows.

Can you build your own windows?

Absolutely.

Many people do.

If I were building another blind tomorrow, though, professionally built windows would be money well spent.

Don't Let the Internet Decide Your Window Height

One question comes up over and over again:

"How high should the windows be?"

Everyone wants an exact measurement. The truth is, there isn't one.

The ideal window height depends on who's actually hunting from the blind. A six-foot-three hunter sitting in an office chair has a completely different eye level than a child sitting in a folding chair. Even switching chairs can change your shooting position by several inches.

From my experience, placing the bottom of the windows somewhere around 38 to 40 inches above the finished floor tends to work well for most adult hunters. It's a good starting point—but that's exactly what it is: a starting point.

The best advice I can give is to wait until the frame is built before committing to your window openings. Put the actual chair you'll be hunting from inside the blind. Sit down. Shoulder your rifle and then mark where the windows naturally need to be.

That ten minutes of planning is worth far more than copying someone else's measurements from the internet.

Every hunter is different.

Build the blind around the hunter—not around a number.

Don't Treat the Door Like an Afterthought

Every hunt begins and ends at the door. If it doesn't open smoothly, close properly, and seal against the weather, you'll be reminded of it every single time you use the blind.

I've hunted from more homemade blinds than I can count, and one pattern seems to repeat itself. The homemade door works great when it's first installed. After a few hot summers and a couple of wet winters, things start changing. The wood expands and contracts enough that the door begins rubbing the frame. It no longer latches easily, or it leaves gaps that allow daylight, insects, wind, and rain to find their way inside.

Wood moves.

That's simply part of building with it. Because of that, I generally prefer using a manufactured door whenever possible.

RV-style doors have become extremely popular for deer blinds, and for good reason. They're lightweight, weather resistant, seal well, and are designed to survive years of outdoor use. Installation is straightforward, and once they're in place they require very little attention.

Another option that's often overlooked is a used residential exterior door. Spend a little time browsing Facebook Marketplace and you'll often find quality exterior doors for surprisingly little money. They're designed to withstand decades of weather on a home, making them more than capable of handling life on a deer blind.

Could you build your own door?

Certainly.

Would I?

Probably not.

There are simply too many good manufactured options available to justify the time and maintenance that often comes with a homemade design.

Is Insulation Worth It?

Ask ten experienced deer hunters whether a blind should be insulated and you'll probably get a lot of different answers. Some won't build another blind without it, while others don't think it's worth the extra cost. The truth is that neither side is wrong. Whether insulation makes sense depends largely on where you hunt, how often you hunt, and how you intend to use the blind.

If you spend your late season in northern climates where temperatures regularly fall well below freezing, insulation can make a tremendous difference. A small heater becomes far more effective, the blind holds its temperature longer, and sitting from daylight until dark becomes much more comfortable.

Hunters in the South often dismiss insulation because our winters are generally mild, but I think that's selling it short. Will insulation turn a deer blind into an air-conditioned room during an early October afternoon in Texas? Of course not. But it will slow the transfer of heat through the walls and roof, making the interior noticeably more comfortable than an uninsulated blind that's been baking in direct sunlight for hours.

One advantage that's often overlooked has nothing to do with temperature.

Insulation also helps reduce noise.

Bare plywood walls tend to amplify every sound inside a blind. A chair scraping across the floor, setting binoculars on a shelf, accidentally bumping a rifle against the wall, or even carrying on a quiet conversation all seem louder than they really are. Insulation helps absorb those sounds, creating a quieter environment that's simply more enjoyable to hunt from.

Would I tell every hunter they need to insulate their blind?

No.

Would I strongly consider it if I were building a permanent blind that I expected to use for years?

Absolutely.

Make the Inside Disappear

One of the most overlooked steps in building a deer blind is something you'll probably never show off to your buddies.

Paint the inside black.

Most builders spend far more time thinking about the exterior than the interior. They debate camouflage patterns, earth-tone colors, and how to make the blind blend into the landscape. In my experience, the inside deserves just as much attention.

The reason is simple.

Whitetails are exceptionally good at detecting movement. If sunlight enters the blind and reflects off light-colored walls, every movement becomes more visible. Turning your head, reaching for binoculars, or shifting in your chair creates contrast that can draw a deer's attention, especially when it's looking toward the blind.

A dark interior changes that.

Instead of reflecting light, it absorbs it. Rather than seeing a hunter silhouetted against bright plywood walls, deer are simply looking into a dark opening. That doesn't make you invisible, but it does make movement much more difficult to detect.

The good news is that this may be one of the least expensive improvements you can make. A gallon of inexpensive flat black paint is all it takes. It doesn't have to be perfect, and no one is going to compliment how beautiful the inside of your deer blind looks.

That's not the point.

The point is reducing the odds of getting busted because a mature buck caught just enough movement to make him uneasy.

I've also found it helps to keep any unused windows closed. The less light entering the blind, the darker the interior remains and the harder it is for deer to distinguish movement.

Choosing the Right Flooring

Flooring is one of those topics where there really isn't a wrong answer.

Every option involves a tradeoff.

Some hunters choose tongue-and-groove vinyl flooring, painted plywood, or other hard surfaces because they're incredibly easy to clean. At the end of the season, leaves, mud, sunflower seed shells, spent brass, and dirt can all be swept out in a matter of minutes. If easy maintenance is your highest priority, it's hard to argue against a hard floor.

The downside is noise.

Hard flooring tends to amplify every movement. Boots are louder. Chairs scrape more noticeably. Accidentally setting down a rangefinder or rifle can sound surprisingly loud inside the confined space of a deer blind.

Personally, I've always preferred carpet.

I'll be the first to admit it isn't perfect. It gets dirty, holds leaves, and somehow always seems to collect burrs. Cleaning it takes considerably more effort than simply grabbing a broom.

Even so, I'd install commercial carpet again tomorrow.

The amount of sound it absorbs is well worth the inconvenience. Footsteps become quieter, chairs slide with less noise, and many of the little sounds that naturally occur during a hunt simply disappear. To me, that's a tradeoff worth making.

Other hunters may feel differently, and that's perfectly fine. There isn't a universally correct choice. Choose the flooring that best matches the way you hunt.

Never Cut Corners on the Stairs

If there's one place where I believe safety should always come before convenience or cost, it's the stairs.

Every hunt begins and ends there. You'll be climbing them before daylight, after rainstorms, while carrying a rifle or bow, a backpack, extra clothing, binoculars, and whatever else you're bringing into the woods. Sometimes you'll be tired. Sometimes the steps will be wet. Depending on where you hunt, they may even be covered in frost or ice.

That's not the place to save a few dollars.

Every tread should feel solid underfoot with no noticeable flex or movement. I also recommend adding some form of slip protection, whether that's adhesive traction strips or a textured anti-slip coating. Both are inexpensive upgrades that can dramatically reduce the chances of slipping.

Handrails are equally important.

I've climbed into plenty of homemade blinds where the stairs themselves were well built, but there was nothing substantial to grab onto. That's manageable until you're carrying a rifle in one hand and a backpack over your shoulder. A sturdy handrail provides another point of contact and can make climbing into the blind much safer.

The angle of the stairs is another area where opinions differ. Personally, I've found that stairs built at roughly a 45-degree angle provide the best balance between comfort and practicality. Much steeper than that and they begin to feel more like climbing a ladder than walking up stairs. That's manageable when your hands are free, but much less comfortable when you're carrying hunting gear. A more gradual climb simply feels safer, especially for children, older hunters, or anyone climbing into the blind before daylight.

Finally, inspect your stairs before every season. Tighten loose screws, replace damaged treads, and look for signs of rot or movement. Problems discovered in the driveway are much easier to fix than problems discovered halfway up the stairs on opening morning.

No deer is worth risking a serious fall.

Protect the Blind You Worked So Hard to Build

After all the measuring, cutting, framing, and assembly, it's finally time to paint the exterior.

For many hunters, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the entire project.

Some create elaborate camouflage patterns designed to blend perfectly into the surrounding woods. Others keep things simple with a single earth-tone color. If you have young kids, this can also be a great opportunity to get them involved. Years from now, their brush strokes may mean far more to you than any professionally painted camouflage pattern ever could.

Personally, I don't believe the design matters nearly as much as many people think.

After a season or two in the woods, surrounding vegetation, shadows, and natural weathering do more to conceal a blind than any camouflage pattern ever will.

The real purpose of paint is protection.

A quality exterior paint seals the wood against moisture, protects it from years of sun and rain, and helps extend the life of the blind. Pay particular attention to end grain, cut edges, trim, corners, and any area where water is most likely to penetrate.

Whether your blind ends up painted in an elaborate camouflage pattern or a simple solid color doesn't matter nearly as much as making sure every exposed surface is properly protected.

Because the best-looking deer blind in the world won't look very good for long if the weather gets to it first.

Don't Forget to Anchor It

One final step that's easy to overlook is securing the blind to the ground.

A deer blind is naturally top heavy and acts like a sail during high winds. A strong thunderstorm, straight-line winds, or even a distant tornado can generate enough force to tip over a blind that isn't properly secured. It doesn't take much for a tall, lightweight structure to become unstable once the wind gets underneath it.

A simple solution is to install a heavy-duty eye bolt (or I-bolt) through the floor joist or platform, then run a steel cable with a turnbuckle to an earth anchor or another solid anchor point. Tightening the turnbuckle keeps everything secure while still allowing for minor adjustments over time.

It's an inexpensive addition that can mean the difference between walking into the woods after a storm and finding your blind exactly where you left it—or finding months of hard work lying on its side.

Today's Deer Blind Is More Than a Place to Stay Dry

Not all that long ago, most deer blinds were little more than a roof and four walls. If they kept the rain off your head and blocked the wind, they had done their job. Hunters accepted being uncomfortable as part of the experience. Dead flashlight batteries, fumbling for gear in the dark, sweating through early-season afternoons, and watching a cell phone battery die halfway through the day were simply inconveniences that came with spending long hours in the woods.

Today's deer blinds have evolved into something entirely different. For many hunters, they're command centers where an entire day is spent glassing fields, watching feeders, filming hunts, charging electronics, and introducing family members to the outdoors. Comfort isn't about luxury or making hunting easier. It's about eliminating distractions so you can remain patient and focused on the woods outside instead of constantly thinking about what's missing inside the blind.

Running wire before the walls are finished is far easier than trying to retrofit a completed blind later. A quiet fan can make an early-season afternoon hunt dramatically more comfortable when temperatures are still pushing into the 80s or 90s. Those conveniences may sound minor until you've hunted without them.

I've always believed that comfortable hunters stay on stand longer. Hunters who stay on stand longer tend to move less, remain more patient, and ultimately give themselves more opportunities to see mature deer. Sometimes success doesn't come from a better rifle, a larger food plot, or a more expensive optic. Sometimes it comes from simply being comfortable enough to stay put when everyone else has already headed back to camp.

Build More Than a Deer Blind

Years from now, it might not matter much whether the floor joists were sixteen inches on center or whether you chose LP SmartSide over steel siding. You won't remember how many screws you drove or how many weekends it took to finish the project. What you'll remember are the mornings spent watching the woods wake up, the first deer your son or daughter harvested from that blind, the stories shared with family and friends, and the hunts that somehow become a little more legendary every time they're retold around deer camp.

That's why I encourage people to think beyond simply building a structure.

Build something that's safe enough to trust every time you climb the stairs. Build something durable enough to withstand years of weather without constant repairs. Build something comfortable enough that you'll enjoy spending an entire day inside it. Most importantly, build something that creates a place where traditions can be passed from one generation to the next.

At the end of the day, a deer blind is nothing more than lumber, steel, screws, glass, and paint.

The memories you make inside it are what make it priceless.
